Lido, one of Ethereum's largest liquid staking providers, has deployed an upgrade to its staking infrastructure aimed at improving validator operations and supporting decentralization. The release centers on Curated Module v2, a new component of Lido's validator system.
In an update published Monday, Lido said Curated Module v2 adds support for Ethereum's 0x02 withdrawal credentials. The change is expected to allow validators to increase their effective balance beyond the standard 32 ETH level, scaling up to as much as 2,048 ETH depending on configuration.
Lido expects the shift to reduce the number of validators needed to represent the same amount of staked ETH. Based on its modeling, and noting the migration has not begun, Lido estimates the validator count could drop from roughly 880,000 to about 628,000, an approximate one-third reduction.
The company said the impact should be concentrated on Ethereum's consensus layer, affecting validator set size and the volume of related validator messages, rather than the execution layer where transaction ordering and gas fees are determined.
Alongside the validator sizing changes, Lido is introducing stronger accountability measures for node operators, including bonding and penalty mechanisms. Lido also indicated future stake allocation may place more weight on operator performance, fees, and contributions to the broader Ethereum ecosystem, though it did not provide detailed parameters.
For stakers, Lido said no action is required because the migration will be handled at the protocol level. The key near-term uncertainty is timing: Lido has not said the migration is underway, and its validator count numbers are projections. Market participants are likely to watch whether real-world validator set changes track Lido's estimates and how the new operator incentive and penalty framework performs as adoption of 0x02 withdrawal credentials expands.
