Bitcoin Briefly Tops $70,000 as Crypto Market Gains $170 Billion
Bitcoin briefly surpassed $70,000 on May 20, lifting total crypto market capitalization by approximately $170 billion to nearly $2.5 trillion, ChainCatcher reported. Ethereum rose over 13% and Solana climbed more than 15%, ending a prolonged correction since last October's peak. Market analysts linked the surge to insider-trading litigation targeting market maker Jane Street, with some commentators saying months of concentrated Bitcoin selloffs around 10 a.m. Eastern Time appeared to stop after the case surfaced, though no public evidence exists of systematic, time-specific selloffs by Jane Street, ChainCatcher said.
