What Is Mezo (MEZO) and How Does It Work?

Mezo (MEZO) is a Bitcoin-native Economic Layer (Layer 2) designed to transform Bitcoin from a dormant savings asset into a functional financial tool. Built by the venture studio Thesis, Mezo aims to create a Circular Bitcoin Economy where users can borrow, spend, and earn yield without ever selling their original BTC. It functions as an EVM-compatible network, allowing developers to build sophisticated DeFi applications like lending protocols and decentralized exchanges that use Bitcoin as their foundational currency.

The network operates on a unique consensus mechanism called Proof of HODL. Instead of traditional mining, users secure the network by locking up their BTC and MEZO tokens. The longer a user commits their assets, the higher their HODL score and subsequent rewards. This model aligns the interests of long-term Bitcoin holders with the security of the platform, effectively paying users to protect the network while keeping their Bitcoin productive.

At the heart of the Mezo ecosystem is MUSD, a decentralized, Bitcoin-backed stablecoin. Users can deposit their BTC as collateral to mint MUSD at low, fixed interest rates often starting at 1%, providing instant liquidity for real-world spending or further DeFi investment. By integrating with decentralized bridges like tBTC and liquidity hubs like Aerodrome, Mezo enables a seamless flow of value between Bitcoin and other major blockchain ecosystems, all while using BTC to pay for network gas fees.

When Did Mezo Protocol Launch?

Mezo was developed by Thesis, a prominent venture studio known for Bitcoin-focused projects like Fold and tBTC. Led by founders Matt Luongo and Brian Mahoney, the protocol transitioned from a successful testnet phase, which saw over $322 million in deposits, to its official Mainnet launch on May 28, 2025.

Positioning itself as the Bitcoin Economic Layer, Mezo raised over $21 million in total funding across multiple rounds, including a $7.5 million strategic round in July 2024 and a $13 million Series A led by Pantera Capital. As of early 2026, the protocol has moved into its full ecosystem expansion phase, focusing on real-world utility and deep liquidity integration.

Mezo Protocol Roadmap (2024–2026)

- Late 2024: Launch of the Mezo Testnet and HODL Points incentive program to bootstrap initial liquidity.

- May 2025: Official Mainnet Launch, introducing the MUSD stablecoin and Proof of HODL staking rewards.

- Q3–Q4 2025: Integration with major liquidity hubs like Aerodrome and the expansion of the Mezo partner dApp marketplace.

- Q1 2026: Launch of institutional-grade custody solutions in partnership with Anchorage Digital.

- March/April 2026: MEZO Token Generation Event (TGE) and inclusion in major exchange listing roadmaps.

- H2 2026 and Beyond: Global expansion of the Circular Bitcoin Economy, targeting mobile-first retail payments and cross-chain BitcoinFi interoperability.

What Is the MEZO Token Used for?

The MEZO token is the primary utility and coordination engine for the Mezo Network, designed to amplify rewards for Bitcoin holders. While Bitcoin remains the network's core asset and fee-payment currency, MEZO serves the following key functions:

- Yield Boosting: Users can lock their MEZO tokens to significantly amplify the yield earned on their deposited BTC up to a 5x boost, incentivizing long-term participation in the Proof of HODL model.

- Governance and Coordination: MEZO holders participate in the protocol’s ve(3,3) framework, voting on how incentives and emissions are distributed across various ecosystem vaults and liquidity gauges.

- Security and Staking: By staking MEZO, users help secure the Bitcoin Economic Layer and earn a portion of the protocol's revenue generated from bridging fees, swap fees, and MUSD interest.

To trade MEZO on the BingX Spot market, simply log into your account, navigate to the Spot tab, and search for the MEZO/USDT trading pair. Once selected, you can enter your desired amount and click Buy MEZO to execute a market or limit order, instantly adding the tokens to your BingX wallet.

What Is Mezo Network Tokenomics?

The MEZO token allocation is strategically designed to prioritize long-term Bitcoin holders and ecosystem growth, with a total fixed supply of 1,000,000,000 tokens.

- Community and Ecosystem (40%): The largest portion is dedicated to the users. This includes airdrops for early points farmers, liquidity mining rewards, and incentives for the Bring Bitcoin Home initiative, which encourages migrating BTC from other chains to Mezo.

- Investors and Partners (30%): Allocated to early strategic backers such as Pantera Capital and Ledger. These tokens are typically subject to a 12-month cliff followed by a 24-month linear vesting period to ensure market stability.

- Core Team (20%): Reserved for the developers at Thesis and core contributors who built the protocol. This allocation follows a strict 36-month vesting schedule to align the team’s interests with the long-term success of the network.

- Foundation Reserve (10%): Managed by the Mezo Foundation to fund ongoing operations, protocol audits, future research, and ecosystem grants for developers building new BitcoinFi applications.
